What does a gift mean to you?

What does a gift mean to you?

A gift, to me, should make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. It should be sent with sentiment, thought and love. It should be personal to the person receiving it and, most of all, it should mean something.

A short history

Gift giving is a tradition that started centuries ago.

It is a way to express our feelings. These could be feelings of affection, appreciation or joy. The giving of gifts is a tradition that predates civilisation, whether it was an unusually shaped stone, a tooth from an animal or the bark from a tree. The giving of gifts was common behaviour before civilisation descended.

The Egyptians were known for their elaborate gift giving. The pharaohs built huge pyramids to store their wealth. The Romans presented each other with good luck tokens which lasted for centuries and influenced Western civilisation on wards.

Today gift giving is still part of our culture. The gifts we send and the messages we convey are what defines us. They are a means for us to communicate our feelings to the other person.

What does it feel like to receive a gift?

When I receive a gift, it makes me feel excited, nervous and happy all at the same time.

Excited, to find out what it is. Nervous, just in case I don’t like it! And happy because even if it’s not something I would choose myself it’s sent with good intentions in mind.

What do you look for when buying a gift?

The giving of a gift can make a person feel happier about themselves as well as to the person that has received their gift. It improves the state of mind and wellbeing of the giver and the receiver. The bond between you is made strong and you have a deeper social connection.

Personally, when looking for a gift, I want it to be unusual, something the receiver opens and thinks there was thought put in. Sometimes I just wanted to get something that’s just simple and straight forward, but the majority of the time the more innovative the gift, the more drawn I am towards it.

My worst fear would be if someone had been given the same gift.
